In 2025, Namibia strengthened its capacity to pursue climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable development. Scaled climate finance, strengthened climate and biodiversity governance, and improved long-term planning enhanced national readiness to meet global environmental commitments while integrating climate action into development strategies. Improved transboundary cooperation and policy coherence supported sustainable management of shared natural resources and climate risks.
At the community level, resilience and green growth outcomes were realized through nature-based solutions, conservation-linked livelihoods, improved water access, and strengthened disaster preparedness. Biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and climate-resilient livelihoods improved incomes, food security, and environmental sustainability. Collectively, these outcomes demonstrate progress toward a development pathway that balances environmental protection, economic opportunity, and social inclusion.
STORIES OF CHANGE - FROM FEAR TO SECURITY
Click here to read how residents of Shilongo Shuukule Village transformed their lives from fear to security. With support from UNDP and the Global Environment Facility, this community in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia addressed the constant threat of lions and hyenas from nearby Etosha National Park. For years, farmers like Hilma Lugambo lived in a state of high alert as predators killed their livestock, which served as their primary source of income and cultural stability. Before 2023, the village recorded over 40 predator attacks, leaving families emotionally exhausted and economically vulnerable.
The introduction of predator resistant kraals and solar powered lighting in April 2023 marked a turning point for the village. These practical tools now protect hundreds of animals and allow families to sleep without the constant threat of financial ruin. Since these interventions began, the community has recorded zero livestock losses. Hilma and her neighbors now possess the equipment and confidence to co-exist with wildlife. This project has restored hope and demonstrated that targeted support can turn a high risk hotspot into a model of safety and resilience.
